Community Arts

Carrboro and the Triangle area of North Carolina (Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill) offer a rich and vibrant arts scene which Carrboro High is lucky to have the opportunity to take advantage of!

JagTheatre and Encore strive to support the local theatre community in various ways. Read more below about some of the excellent programs we are fortunate to benefit from and enjoy!

Blue Box Theatre Company

The Blue Box Theatre Company is a collective of creative artists committed to bringing moving stories to life, whether those stories are new, old, or borrowed.  Blue Box was founded around the idea that every season would contain something old (a reimagined classic text), something new (a premiere of an original script), something borrowed (an adaptation), and something blue (an in-house event to thank and celebrate our company members).

UNC PlayMakers Repertory Company

As the premiere professional theatre company of North Carolina, PlayMakers Repertory Company strives to produce entertaining, relevant, and courageous work that tells stories from and for a multiplicity of perspectives and creates transformational impact in our immediate and extended communities.

DPAC

Since its opening in 2008, DPAC (Durham Performing Arts Center) has become the center for live entertainment in North Carolina. Recognized for its contemporary design, DPAC features 2,700 seats, intimate sightlines, and state-of-the-art sound and video. Ranked annually among the top-five theaters in America by three leading national magazines that cover live entertainment events and venues, in 2020 DPAC was among ten U.S. venues nominated for Theatre of the Decade by Pollstar Magazine. With a mission of presenting one-of-a-kind live entertainment events, DPAC truly has “something for everyone,” hosting up to 550,000 guests per year for its 200 to 250 performances.  Each season, the stage at DPAC comes alive with spectacular touring Broadway productions, high-profile concert and comedy events, family shows and special events of all kinds. DPAC hosts the Triangle Rising Star Awards which celebrate high school musical theatre achievements across Central North Carolina each school year.

DPAC Performing Arts Ambassadors

At the beginning of each school year, DPAC looks for high school students who are passionate about Broadway and the performing arts from across the Triangle to become Performing Arts Ambassadors. As part of the team at DPAC, Ambassadors shadow staff across multiple departments, attend DPAC’s variety of events, and report on their experiences via videos, online blogs, and social media posts.  Ambassadors also receive exclusive opportunities to go behind-the-scenes at some of DPAC’s biggest events. These unique, memorable, and impactful experiences offer the chance to learn about the importance of the performing arts and live entertainment, while also preparing students for future careers in the performing arts industry.

Paperhand puppets

A collaborative theater company that creates original productions each year.  Their performance include music and puppetry and oftentimes bring awareness to environmental and political issues

Mission: Paperhand Puppet Intervention’s mission is to use diverse styles of puppetry and artistic expression to create works that inspire, promote social change and are deeply rewarding for all involved. These styles include: giant puppets, rod puppets, shadow puppetry, masks, stilt dancing and anything under the sky that strikes our fancy.

Rising Stars

Triangle Rising Stars is a Regional Awards Program and a part of the National High School Musical Theatre Awards, aka The Jimmy™ Awards. Student performers all across the country compete in the national program by winning top honors at regional high school musical theatre awards competitions presented by Broadway League member performing arts centers just like DPAC.

JagTheatre plans to participate in the Jimmy Awards during years when we produce Approved Musicals with Qualifying Roles and while Triangle Rising Stars offers performance opportunities for representatives from all participating schools.  Decision to participate is evaluated on a year-to-year basis, dependent on the values of our department.
